Since I expect many students may want to come for help on Thursday before
the exam, I am cancelling my Wednesday office hour and adding an extra
hour on Thursday, 5/14. So my office hours on Thursday will be from
4:00 - 6:00 PM.
Computer Science Help Center Closing
The Computer Science Help Center will be closing for the remainder of the Spring '09 semester and the summer. Tomorrow will be the last day it's open, Tuesday, 5/12/09.Skills Post-Assessment
As you know, the Computer Science & Electrical Engineering Department has been conducting a study of skills aptitudes and their correlation to CS course levels. We are asking students in the beginning CS classes to take the same short skills assessment that you took at the beginning of the semester. It is provided on Blackboard for this course and is called Skills Post-Assessment. After you have completed the Skills Post-Assessment, your answers and the correct answers will be provided to you. As an incentive to participate, students who complete the assessment will be given 5 points of extra credit on their last programming project, Proj5. To receive the extra credit you must complete the assessment before 11:59 PM, Friday, 5/15/09.
UMBC DIgital ENtertainment Conference
10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Sat 4/25/09 in LH2If you are interested in finding out what its like to work in the computer game industry then you should come to the 4th annual UMBC Digital Entertainment Conference [1] this Saturday.
This free event is organized by the UMBC Game Developers Club [2] and will be held from 10:00am to 6:00pm 25 April in Lecture Hall 2. This year's conference will feature speakers from local game studios who will talk about programming, game design and art in game development, including:

Lab 9 Make-up
Sections 0201 and 0203 were not able to do Lab 9 in their normally scheduled time slots due to the power outage on Tuesday. Aradhita and Aratrika will be holding Lab 9 make-up sessions in ITE 240 on Friday, 4/17. If you are in one of these sections and would like to earn a grade for Lab 9 you can come in anytime from noon to 3:00 PM to do the work.Class Cancelled - Tuesday 4/14/09 5:30 - 6:45

Aratrika will be holding a midterm review session in ITE 201 B on Tuesday, 3/24, from 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM.Snow Day & Lab 4
Due to our recent snow day, Mon 3/2, students in sections 0101, 0103 and 0105 were not able to attend this week's lab. Students from these sections may complete Lab 4 on their own and show their TA the files next week for full credit. If you need help with the exercise, you may work on Lab 4 during your TA's office hours in ITE 240 this week or next week. We will not accept Lab 4s after Wed, 3/11 at 7:00 PM.Skills Assessment

Linux Users' Group - Kiosks & Installfest
The Linux Users' Group, LUG, is providing kiosks offering laptops running Ubuntu Linux for you to try out. Mon - Thur, 2/16 - 2/19, Main Street in the Commons, from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Installation CDs of Ubuntu Linux are available free. LUG members will be available to answer any questions the testers may have.Followed by the Linux Installfest on Friday, 2/20 from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, also on Main Street in the Commons. Students and staff are encouraged to bring their laptops and desktops to have a savvy LUG member assist in the installation of Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution.
Your Quota
Keep an eye on your quota!! Each user is given a certain amount of disk space (100MB) on the GL network. If you exceed this disk space, we cannot send you email (i.e. project grades) and you can't create files (i.e. project files) To check your quota, at the linux prompt, type:linux3[16]% quota -v Volume Name Quota Used %Used Partition user.dforna1 75000 55198 74% 69%This will show how much disk space your are using. If the percentage used is approaching 100%, you need to clean up your account. This can be done by typing the following at the linux prompt:

.emacs
EMACS -- when emacs (or xemacs) begins, it looks for and reads a file named .emacs in your home directory to obtain configuration information. Save the CS201 recommended version of the .emacs file (note the leading "dot") in your Unix home directory to get the following features:- Automtic formatting in accordance with the CS201 coding style standard
- A working backspace key. Backspace will now delete to the left of the cursor instead of invoking "help". It also remaps CTL-X? to be the new "help" key.
The .emacs file is publicly available in the directory
/afs/umbc.edu/users/b/o/bogar/pub
To copy the file, 'cd' to your home directory and type
the command
cp /afs/umbc.edu/users/b/o/bogar/pub/.emacs .
Don't forget the dot (.) at the end... it means copy the
file to the current directory.
