3. Unix
   • Students that do not know unix can either access the site above or should buy "Unix at UMBC" at the bookstore (cost about $5.00).
   • Dialing in
     • Provide the following information:
     • 9600/14400 744-8622
     • Full duplex
     • Asynchronous transmission
     • Parity none, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit
     • Terminal type VT100
4. Editors
   • Explain that c programs are written using a text editor. They may choose to use :
     • Pico - looks & acts like pine
     • VI - those that know VI already can still use it
     • emacs - Students can teach themselves emacs by using the emacs tutorial.
       • Type emacs at the unix prompt, then ^h t
       • Mention that CSCM offers tutorials on emacs and other topics.
5. Email
   • Pine - Walk the students through writing an email.
6. Web
   • Browsers: Netscape, Explorer
   • Have students go to the course homepage
