Using Pair Programming in CMSC104

Pair programming guidelines

• Remember that two heads are better than 1! Often, when programming alone, we run into errors that can take us hours to fix. Typically, someone else can look at the code and find an error right away.
• The program should be the effort of both partners. You should not make any changes to the code unless you are sitting in person with your partner or your partner has seen and agrees with the changes.
• You should switch roles with your partner periodically while you are working. One person should be the "driver" and do all of the typing. The other person is the reviewer and tells the driver when there are errors. Every 20 minutes or so, you should reverse roles.
• If you have any problems with your partner, contact me immediately.

Setting up your account for pair programming

• Log into your gl account.

• Issue the following command to create a link to your pair directory

  linux1[2]% /afs/umbc.edu/users/d/b/dblock/pub/setup104
  
  Using existing link.
  
  Your assignment directories have been created.
  You may cd into 104pair directory.

  If the command setup104 command works correctly, you should see the same message printed above letting you know that "Your assignment directories have been created." If you do not see the same output as above, please make sure you have typed the command correctly. If you have and it still does not work, then please see me.
• Look at the contents of your home directory.

  linux1[2]% ls
  Mail  bin  www  cs104  104pair
  linux1[3]%
            

  You should see a new file created called 104pair. This is a link to the directory where you will work on your assignments. Both you and your partner will have a link to the same directory. You should just keep one working version of your project in that directory.
• Change into the 104pair directory and look at the contents.

  linux1[6]% cd 104pair
  linux1[7]% ls
  Lab  Proj2  Proj3  Proj4
  linux1[8]%
            

  You should see directories for a lab and for the remaining projects. You should cd into the appropriate directory for the assignment you are working on and use xemacs to create a file in that directory.
