CMSC 202 FAQ
- How do I get a GL account?
If you are a registered student, then you already have one - it is the same
as your myUMBC userid and password.
- How do I access the GL machines from home?
Refer to the Resources page and flip through the Remote Access section. These
Presentations describe how to setup an X-Windows client, how to SSH into the
GL machines, how to use SCP, and other UMBC-specific information.
- What if I'm having problems logging into the GL machines?
You should contact OIT - their email is available from the "Computing" area of
the UMBC website.
- What open labs are available on campus and what are their hours?
You can check the OIT website by clicking on 'Computing' from the main UMBC
site. Then under Classroom Services->Computer Labs you can find hours,
locations, and other lab-related information.
- What should I do if I am not enrolled in the Blackboard site for this
course?
You can self-enroll in this course by searching for it under Courses. If you
cannot find it or are having some other self-enrollment difficulty, please
contact your instructor asap.
- What should I do if I am not enrolled in this course at all or need to
change to a different lab section?
Contact your instructor asap. Only your instructor can add you to a closed
course.
- I'm new to UMBC, where do I start?
This is a broad question, but here are a few ideas:
- Read/Skim the entire course website - even if parts are not
currently relevant, you should know how to find them later when they are
- Learn how to use Linux - Start with the Linux-related links on the
Resources page
- Familiarize yourself with the Blackboard site - announcements,
discussion forums, and other course-related materials will periodically be
posted to this site. Usually when something interesting becomes available, we
will post an announcement.
- Attend lecture - Many announcements will only be made in lecture,
often students will ask questions of clarification that will be answered in
lecture - be there!
- I have to type ./Proj0 to run my Proj0 application, what's going
on?
You are working in the b-shell (or bourne-shell, also called bash). By default,
the GL systems usually default to the c-shell (csh). If you are being forced
to use bash, you should go and talk to OIT and then will give you a new
.cshrc file that will enable you to use csh by default.
